🌱 The Big Idea

High school health education isn’t just about memorizing facts — it’s about preparing teens to live balanced, healthy, and responsible lives now and into adulthood.

The idea behind Health Education in high school is to help students gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to make informed decisions that promote lifelong physical, mental, and social well-being.

Here’s what that means in practice:

🧠 1. Knowledge: Understanding Health Topics

High school health classes teach about:

  • Physical health – nutrition, exercise, sleep, hygiene, disease prevention

  • Mental/emotional health – stress management, coping skills, mental illness awareness

  • Social health – communication, relationships, respect, conflict resolution

  • Substance use prevention – understanding the effects of drugs, alcohol, and vaping

  • Human growth and development – puberty, sexual health, consent, and healthy boundaries

💬 2. Skills: Applying What You Learn

Students practice:

  • Making healthy choices

  • Setting goals

  • Managing stress and emotions

  • Resisting peer pressure

  • Seeking help and using health resources

❤️ 3. Attitudes: Building a Healthy Mindset

The course encourages students to:

  • Value their own health and safety

  • Show empathy and respect for others

  • Take responsibility for their actions

  • Develop confidence and self-worth
