RAUFSD Music Curriculum:

 1.  World Music Cultures                                          

Course Syllabus:

  • The focus of this course surveys the use and value of music in the lives of people from different cultures. We will study musical traditions within historical, geographical, and social contexts.

  Objectives:

  • Students will survey a diverse collection of music representing many styles and cultures.

  • Students will identify music as an important marker of time and culture.

  • Students will acquire a more enhanced overview of their own musical heritage and develop a greater understanding of music as an essential component of all world cultures.

  Student Responsibilities/Grading Policy

  • Written assignments – PowerPoint worksheets, active listening reflections, and short essays.

  • Performance (Participation) – Singing/Performing on instruments.

  • Projects – Presentations/Performances.

  • Chapter Quizzes/Tests.

  • Class Participation – Active role in class discussions. Classroom attendance is required unless legally excused.

 Grading Policy:

  • Class Participation -  50%

  • Assignments – 20%

  • Chapter Quizzes/Tests - 20%

  • Projects-10%

  Assignment Due Dates:

  • Assignments are due on specified dates. Late work will be accepted by permission only.

    Pupil's Ability to Receive Course Credit:

    • A student who falls below an 85% attendance level may not be eligible to receive course credit. Before the denial of course credit due to insufficient attendance, the School District will employ intervention strategies as outlined in this plan.

    • When an excused absence occurs, the student may be given the opportunity to make up any missed work.

    • When an unexcused absence occurs, the student may be allowed to complete missed work to receive a grade, but a penalty will be reflected in the grade.

2. Applied Music                               

  Course Syllabus:

  • This course examines music theory topics and their applications in the works of various composers and styles.

  • Students will listen to an extensive survey of listening examples, identifying theoretical criteria within contexts of western art music, folk music, and popular music.

  • Students will broaden their knowledge of the tools composers use in creating music and what makes music interesting and relevant.

 Student Responsibilities:

  • Written assignments – Daily reading/worksheet, biography assignments, active listening reflections, and class discussions.

  • Performance (Participation) – Singing/Performing on instruments.

  • Projects – Presentations/Performances.

  • Chapter Quizzes/Tests.

  • Class Participation – Active role in class performances/discussions. Classroom attendance is required unless legally excused.

3. History of Rock and Roll                                

  Course Syllabus:

  • The focus of this course surveys the history and evolution of rock and roll music and its roots in regional music. The course will address the historical, cultural, economic, and technological evolutions that influenced the ascendancy and decline of rock and roll, from World War II to present-day.

  Objectives:

  • Students will reflect on experiencing a survey of historical listening examples, within contexts of urban-industrial, and rural-agricultural economies and cultures.

  • Students will broaden their knowledge of the social impact of rock and roll music, and its importance in American cultural traditions.

  • Students will further identify rock and roll music as a significant influence on economics, politics, and culture.

  • Students will acquire a more enhanced overview of your own musical tastes and why rock music is a definitive component of American culture.

  Student Responsibilities:

  • Written assignments – Daily reading/worksheet, biography assignments, active listening reflections, and class discussions.

  •   Performance (Participation) – Singing/Performing on instruments.

  • Projects – Presentations/Performances.

    5. Elementary Music                               

    Course Syllabus:

  • Students will perform on ukulele, hand drums, hand percussion, by rote learning and rhythm, graphic, and pitch notation.

    ·       Performance activities will include focus on dynamics, tempo, tone, expression, form, and improvisation.

    ·       Students will be assessed primarily on effort in classroom practice and choral performances.

    Student Responsibilities:

    ·  

        

  • Performance – Singing/Performing on instruments, reading/performing from traditional and graphic music notation.

    ·      

  • Projects and Performances: Singing/Performing from memory.

    ·      

  • Class Participation – Active role in group and individual performances. Classroom attendance is required unless legally excused.

     

  • Grading Policy (K-6):

    • S = Secure: requires no guidance from the teacher and consistently understands the skills/concepts/strategies

    • O = On Target: requires minimal instructional guidance from the teacher and is working toward applying and extending his/her/their learning in this area

    • D = Developing: depends on instructional guidance from the teacher to perform the skills/concepts/strategies in a satisfactory manner

    • I = Introducing: has been introduced the skills/concepts/strategies and will need frequent additional instruction, reteaching and practice to perform in a satisfactory manner.

    • Elementary Final Grades:

    • 1 = Above grade level

    • 2 = On grade level

    • 3 = Below grade level
