On March 12, 2011, Randolph Academy Board of Education members travelled to Whitesville Central School to meet with elected officials.
Hosted by the Allegany Cattaraugus School Boards Association, the Legislative Breakfast focused on budgetary and public policy issues affecting education.
With the Governor's budget proposal slating unprecedented cuts to state aid for education, the stakes are very high for school districts. School Board members who were present advocated for some measures to create more equity in the impact of the cuts, since high needs rural districts are impacted more drastically than wealthier districts.
Assemblyman Giglio spoke of his involvement as Chair of the NYS Medicaid Task Force. Senator Young spoke of her work on the Senate Finance Committee, sharing details of the budget process and the strong likelihood of an on time budget. She stated that mandate relief must be a part of the state's response to the current financial crisis. Congressman Reed shared that the No Child Left Behind legislation will be reauthorized over the next several months and that he anticipates more of a focus on formulas based upon performance. |
