| Steel Drum Band Performs
It was The Sounds of the Season and more at Randolph Academy on December 21 as the school's Steel Drum Band performed their third-annual holiday program.
Under the direction of Mr. Feldman and assisted by Mrs. Terry, the melodic island sounds flowed through the school as the students performed holiday favorites such as "Jingle Bells" along with other arrangements. "Mele Kalikimaka" featured the steel drums along with the ukulele and vocals. "Sandpoint Reggae" was played with steel drums and organ, while "Guantanamera" included the keyboard supporting the steel drum sound. "Beautiful Girls," a popular song made famous by performer Sean Kingston, was also played by the group with steel drums, conga drum, keyboard, and vocals.
Many guests attended the band's performance, including many of the students' family members. The audience was also treated to healthy snacks and drink prepared by Mr. Abbott's food service class.
Thirty-five Randolph Academy students study steel drums through band and music classes. Band members are also scheduled for additional instruction and lessons at various times throughout the school week when their class schedules permit.
Students who performed in the holiday show included Jenaida M; Charles M; Jackson K; Cleighton K; Keith B; Nikki J; Che M; Printice L; Tom W; Mackenzie K; Bobby H; Darryn H; and Laurie H.
Darryn H, who has been playing the steel drums for about a year, enjoys being in the band because it allows her to get away from things. "It's fun" Darryn said. "I can get away from class, hang out with friends, and do something different." She also added that playing music helps when she may be upset or angry about something. "Playing music helps me get my mind off things when I'm mad."
Mackenzie K. says his success in band has helped him but exposing him to and allowing him to learn other things. "When I learn something in band, Mr. Feldman will let me help and teach other kids. That lets me help myself and others at the same time."
